Congressman Henry Cuellar and City of Laredo Celebrate Opening of Affordable Housing Project for Elderly Residents

On February 8, 2024, Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) joined the City of Laredo in celebrating the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Market Street Elderly Affordable Rental Housing Project.

The project, aimed at providing affordable housing for low-income elderly individuals, was made possible through federal grant funding totaling $1,296,695 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Of this amount, $1,281,695 was allocated through HUD’s HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) Program, with an additional $15,000 provided by HUD’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Cuellar emphasized the importance of such initiatives in supporting the local community, particularly its elderly residents. He credited the collaboration between federal and local authorities, including Dr. Victor Treviño, Mayor of Laredo, and the Laredo City Council, for bringing the project to fruition.

The Market Street Elderly Affordable Rental Housing Project comprises two 1-bedroom apartments, five studio apartments, and a community laundry room. Its primary goal is to address housing insecurity among Laredo seniors while fostering social inclusion and community engagement.

This project underscores Dr. Cuellar's commitment to community development. Notably, he had previously secured $247,100 in federal funding for Laredo’s Vietnam Veterans Plaza through HUD’s CDBG Program, demonstrating his ongoing support for initiatives benefiting the local area.
