Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) stands as the largest contributor to Texas' military economic impact, according to a recent study by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Governor Greg Abbott revealed that Texas’ 14 military installations collectively generated $151.2 billion for the state, with over $55 billion attributed to JBSA alone. This marks a significant increase of 33% since 2019.
“This is great news for San Antonio,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said. “I believe this growth is due to the City’s strong partnership with the military, our progressive legislative actions, and tangible financial investments supporting JBSA’s mission. We will continue strengthening our partnership with the military through the superb work of our Military Transformation Task Force, Military and Veterans Affairs Department, and my annual visits to the Pentagon.”
Director of Military and Veteran Affairs, Juan Ayala (Maj. Gen., USMC, Ret.), emphasized the city's commitment to preserving military missions and installations through strategic investments and opposition to encroachment threats. “San Antonio has not lost any military missions or installations in the past two decades due to its opposition to encroachment that threatens compatible land use at Camp Bullis and our three main installations,” he said. “In addition, we have invested city funds and secured state and federal grants totaling more than $140 million supporting military commander mission priorities.”
San Antonio remains a key employment hub with approximately 242,000 direct and indirect jobs linked to military activities, sustaining its status as a top employer.
