The Kerrville Police Department, in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation, is set to begin its summer driving program called Operation Slowdown to target speeding. The Operation Slowdown Campaign will begin on July 19th and end on August 7th. During this time, Kerrville Police Department officers will be conducting extra traffic enforcement patrols with the goal of encouraging safe driving throughout Kerrville.
"Every single day since November 7, 2000, someone has died on the Texas roadways. We know speeding plays a huge role as a contributing factor to the cause and severity of vehicle crashes,” said Kerrville Chief of Police Chris McCall. "Our KPD team will be keeping a sharp eye out for speeding vehicles and other dangerous driving. This operation is not only meant to supplement our enforcement efforts, but to also encourage drivers to slow down and be safe while they're utilizing our roadways.”
Speeding is the number one contributing factor in traffic crashes in Texas. In 2023, 1,456 people were killed in speed-related crashes on Texas roadways and another 5,980 were seriously injured. Speeding increases the distance needed to stop to avoid a crash and increases the risk that a crash will result in severe injuries or death. Speeders can face an expensive fine, court costs, and higher insurance rates. Strict speed limit enforcement is expected during this campaign.
