Second Arrest Made in Selma Murder Case Linked to Highway Racing Activities

On Friday, October 11th, the Selma Police Department announced the second arrest in connection with the murder of Joseph Banales. Thirty-three-year-old Matthew Kirk Alexander, a resident of San Antonio, was contacted by police following the earlier arrest of Jacob Serna.

During questioning, Alexander admitted to shooting Banales on April 15th, 2023, and subsequently turned over the firearm used in the incident. The weapon was sent to the Bexar County Lab, where it was confirmed to be the murder weapon. Alexander acknowledged his acquaintance with Jacob Serna and stated that they communicated on the night of the shooting.

Investigators believe that both Serna and Alexander were involved in highway racing activities that led to the shooting. The motive remains unclear, particularly regarding why Jacob Serna's wife provided information suggesting that Serna shot Banales; this aspect of the investigation is ongoing.

Since the incident, Selma Police Detectives, along with various law enforcement partners, including the Texas Rangers, DPS, and U.S. Secret Service, have been analyzing extensive digital data and conducting hundreds of interviews. Based on the evidence collected, an arrest warrant for Matthew Kirk Alexander was issued, leading to his arrest and booking into the Bexar County Jail.

Jacob Serna is expected to have his charges downgraded to Racing with Serious Bodily Injury or Death. The investigation into the case continues as authorities gather more information.
