As the holiday season approaches, many people consider adopting a pet as the perfect gift for their family. While San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) does not discourage holiday adoptions, they stress the importance of making an informed, long-term decision when bringing a new pet into the home.
Adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment that requires careful thought, ensuring the choice is suitable for both the new pet and the adopter’s family. SAACS encourages prospective pet owners to consider the responsibilities involved in caring for an animal year-round, not just as a seasonal decision.
"Adoption is always the best option," said a SAACS spokesperson. "But it’s crucial to understand the risks of buying pets from backyard breeders or illegal sellers. These animals may suffer from a lack of veterinary care, including necessary vaccinations, and often face health and behavioral issues due to poor breeding practices."
Illegal pet sellers are often found selling animals in unauthorized locations like parking lots or street corners. It is against the law for pets to be sold in such spaces. Breeders who sell directly to the public must display the required permits in their advertisements. Pets purchased from these sellers may not have proper documentation, or their veterinary records may be falsified.
SAACS also highlights that local pet stores are legally required to collaborate with certified animal organizations instead of large commercial breeders, often referred to as puppy mills, that prioritize profits over the well-being of animals.
Pets adopted from SAACS are provided with vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, and a microchip with lifetime registration, ensuring the pet’s long-term health and safety. Additionally, SAACS offers access to training advice for dogs to help owners provide the best care possible.
SAACS encourages potential pet owners to adopt from local shelters and certified rescues, which prioritize the health, welfare, and socialization of their animals. With proper consideration, adopting a pet can be a rewarding experience for both the animal and the family.
