Ryan Scott Pena, 36, of Bandera, Texas, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison following a high-speed chase that endangered multiple drivers and led to his arrest for drug possession.
The incident began on February 27, 2024, at approximately 2:45 PM when Boerne 911 Dispatch received reports of a reckless motorcycle rider on Highway 46 heading toward Boerne from Bandera. A Boerne Police Officer and a caller observed the motorcycle turn into the Home Depot parking lot before continuing toward the IH-10 East Bound Frontage Road.
Kendall County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Cpl. Escalante responded and identified the suspect as Pena, who was operating a black and orange Honda sport motorcycle. When Escalante attempted a traffic stop, Pena fled at speeds reaching 120 mph on IH-10 westbound. During the pursuit, Pena crossed the median into oncoming traffic, nearly causing multiple collisions.
The chase ended when Pena lost control and crashed between the main lanes of IH-10 and the access road. He fled on foot, attempting to hide his helmet and gloves under vehicles at a nearby car dealership. A witness provided his location, and Boerne Police Department officers, including Cpl. Padilla and Assistant Chief Lackey, located and detained him near Old San Antonio Road and Cascade Cavern.
A search of Pena revealed 0.75 grams of methamphetamine in a clear plastic bag. He was transported to Boerne Methodist ER for evaluation before being booked into the Kendall County Jail.
Authorities later discovered Pena had previously served two prison sentences and was on parole for a 10-year sentence at the time of his arrest. While out on bond, he removed his GPS ankle monitor and went into hiding. The U.S. Marshals ultimately found him concealed in a makeshift bunker beneath a bathtub at a residence.
Assistant District Attorney Derly Chapa prosecuted the case on behalf of the State of Texas.
