A 17-year-old Schertz student, identified as CJ Matthews, was arrested on March 5, 2025, after a foot chase that followed a narcotics investigation at Samuel Clemens High School.
At approximately 12:26 p.m., Schertz Police School Resource Officers, along with school administrators, were questioning Matthews, who was identified as a possible suspect in a narcotics offense. During the questioning, Matthews forcefully pushed past both an administrator and an officer before fleeing the campus, heading toward The Village subdivision. The officer and administrator sustained minor injuries during the altercation.
Additional officers quickly joined the pursuit, and shortly after, a resident reported seeing Matthews in the backyard of a home in the 1000 block of Williamsburg. Officers arrived on scene and took Matthews into custody without further incident.
Matthews, a Schertz resident, is facing multiple charges, including:
- Two counts of Assault on a Public Servant (3rd-degree felony)
- Tampering with Evidence (3rd-degree felony)
- Possession of a Controlled Substance PG2 <1g Drug-Free Zone (3rd-degree felony)
- Evading Arrest or Detention (Class A misdemeanor)
Matthews was transported to the Guadalupe County Jail and processed without incident.
Schertz Police Chief Lowery expressed the seriousness of the incident, stating, “When our youth engage in risky behavior, the consequences can be catastrophic and life-altering.” He also thanked the resident who assisted in the arrest, as well as the Guadalupe County Precinct 3 Constables Office and Schertz Cibolo Universal City ISD Administration for their support.
There were minimal disruptions to school activities, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
