Man Arrested in New Braunfels Elderly Fraud Scam Investigation

Chaopeng Huang

New Braunfels police arrested a California man as part of an ongoing investigation into an email scam targeting the elderly.

On March 6, 2025, officers responded to a report of attempted fraud at a home in the 1100 block of Lime Gruene Road. An elderly resident reported receiving an email claiming fraudulent activity on a cryptocurrency account. The email instructed the resident to allow remote access to his computer and withdraw a large sum of cash for a courier to collect.

The resident realized the scam before handing over any money and contacted police.

On March 7, New Braunfels officers arrested the courier, identified as 25-year-old Chaopeng Huang of San Lorenzo, California, when he arrived at the resident’s home. Huang was transported to the Comal County Jail and charged with:

  • Exploitation of the Elderly
  • Financial Abuse of the Elderly (>$2,500 <$30,000)
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance (Penalty Group 1/1-B <1G)

Bond was set at a combined $25,000, which Huang posted on March 9 before being released.

The investigation is ongoing, with the New Braunfels Police Department Criminal Investigation Division working alongside the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations. Authorities indicated additional arrests and charges may be pending.
