The City of Boerne and its Police Department are mourning the tragic loss of K-9 Chico, who was killed in the line of duty in the early morning hours of Thursday, April 10, 2025.
According to Boerne Police Chief Steve Perez, K-9 Chico had been a valued member of the department since November 2023. "We are heartbroken by this loss," Chief Perez said. "K-9 Chico was a loyal and courageous partner who served our department and community with honor, pride, and dedication."
The incident occurred shortly after midnight when an officer initiated a traffic stop. A K-9 unit, including Chico, responded to assist. After Chico gave a positive alert for narcotics on the suspect vehicle, he was secured back inside the patrol vehicle. As officers prepared to leave, the patrol car door unexpectedly opened due to a malfunctioning locking mechanism, and K-9 Chico ran towards Interstate 10. Despite immediate search efforts by officers, Chico was tragically found in the grassy median of the interstate, where he had been struck by a vehicle. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after being located.
During his time with the Boerne Police Department, K-9 Chico was an active member of the community, participating in demonstrations and other public events.
The department has expressed deep sorrow for the loss, especially for Chico's handler and his family. A table has been set up in the lobby of the Boerne Police Department for community members who wish to leave cards or written messages in memory of K-9 Chico.
In lieu of flowers or physical donations, the department asks that contributions be made to the Boerne Police Foundation in memory of K-9 Chico.
