Stolen Vehicle Pursuit in New Braunfels Ends in Arrest: Driver Collides with Patrol Vehicles, Injures Officer

Nathaniel Moreland

In the early hours of November 6, 2023, New Braunfels Police Department responded to a call at Tex Best Travel Center in the 2700 block of I-35 North. Officers discovered a male individual asleep inside a white Toyota Corolla, later identified as stolen from San Antonio. Upon waking the driver, officers were briefly engaged in conversation before the suspect accelerated, colliding with two patrol vehicles in an attempt to flee. One officer sustained minor injuries and was later cleared at a local hospital.

A pursuit ensued as the driver headed northbound on I-35, reversed direction in San Marcos, and continued southbound. The chase extended through New Braunfels into Schertz, where spike strips were deployed, successfully puncturing the suspect's tires and bringing the pursuit to an end. The driver, identified as 41-year-old Nathaniel Moreland of San Antonio, was taken into custody without further incident.

Moreland was transported to the Comal County Jail and booked on charges including Assault on a Public Servant, Evading Arrest in a Vehicle, two counts of Accident Involving Damage to a Vehicle (over $200), Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, and Possession of a Controlled Substance. A small amount of methamphetamine was discovered during the arrest.

The incident remains under investigation, and additional charges may be pending.
