The Alamo Colleges District is set to welcome world-renowned poet Nikki Giovanni for an engaging discussion on solidarity, collective healing, and narrative change as catalysts for social transformation. The event will take place on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, from noon to 2 p.m. at San Antonio College’s McAllister Auditorium.
Nikki Giovanni, an esteemed author and recipient of numerous accolades, including seven N.A.A.C.P. Image Awards, the first Rosa Parks Woman of Courage Award, the Langston Hughes Medal for Poetry, and the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, will offer insights into themes of unity, the potency of language, building compassionate communities, and the role of the arts in healing.
The event is part of Alamo Colleges’ commemoration of the 2024 National Day of Collective Healing and is an official Truth, Collective Healing & Transformation event. Dr. Mike Flores, Chancellor of the Alamo Colleges District, expressed pride in hosting Nikki Giovanni and anticipates her impactful contribution to the Alamo Colleges community.
The discussion will be moderated and will coincide with the official Dream Week San Antonio events. Free and open to the public, the event has limited seating for 500 attendees.
