San Antonio International Airport Receives $30M in FAA Grants for Terminal Expansion and Upgrades

San Antonio International Airport (SAT) has received a significant boost with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarding $30 million in grants. These funds, allocated through the Fiscal Year 2024 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) Airport Terminals Program (ATP) and the Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) program, are aimed at enhancing airport facilities across the nation.

Of the $30 million, $18 million will be directed towards the construction of a new terminal slated to open in 2028 under the ATP. Additionally, $12 million will be allocated for electrical upgrades in Terminal A through the AIG.

Expressing gratitude for the grants, Mayor Ron Nirenberg extended appreciation to several key figures including Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, as well as Congressmen Greg Casar, Joaquin Castro, Henry Cuellar, Tony Gonzalez, and Chip Roy for their advocacy efforts in securing these funds.

Director of Airports for the San Antonio Airport System, Jesus Saenz, emphasized the importance of continually enhancing the traveler experience and modernizing airport operations with these grants.

City Manager Erik Walsh highlighted the broader impact of the terminal expansion, emphasizing its role in driving economic growth and connectivity for the region.

This recent funding adds to the $20 million grant awarded to SAT in February 2023 for the construction of the Ground Load Facility (GLF), set to open in 2025. Saenz emphasized the necessity of keeping up with growing demand, with SAT experiencing its busiest year on record in 2023, serving 10.7 million passengers.
