Homeowners in San Antonio are being offered a lifeline in navigating the complexities of property taxes as the city launches its 2024 Property Tax Help sessions. These sessions aim to educate homeowners about various exemptions available and the property tax protest process, potentially leading to significant savings on property taxes.
Scheduled to run from February through May, the sessions provide homeowners with an opportunity to apply for exemptions and gain insights into protesting the appraised value of their homes.
Beginning with an introductory overview of different property exemptions and the protest process, the sessions offer personalized assistance through one-on-one workshops with knowledgeable representatives. These representatives are equipped to address queries, offer guidance, and assist in completing necessary forms.
Veronica Garcia, director of the City's Neighborhood and Housing Services Department, emphasized the importance of easing the financial burden of property taxes for families. "When property taxes are a financial burden, we want to prioritize connecting families to resources that help them understand their tax bill and options," Garcia stated. She highlighted the significance of these sessions, especially in light of the recent decision by the San Antonio City Council to double the homestead property tax exemption to 20 percent.
To ensure efficient assistance, check-in begins 30 minutes prior to the start of each event. Attendees will be served on a first-come, first-served basis, with the number of individuals assisted dependent on the availability of volunteers at each session.
Representatives from the Bexar County Appraisal District will be present to field questions and facilitate on-site filing. Additionally, staff from the Tax Assessor's Office will be on hand to address inquiries regarding payment plans.
Recommended documents to take and Bexar County resources can be found on the Neighborhood and Housing Services Department’s Property Tax Help webpage. Spanish and American Sign Language interpreters will be on site at each session to help with interpretation services. A full list of property tax help workshops is below. Recorded spring presentations are available online at SanAntonio.gov/PropertyTaxHelp.
