Congressman Henry Cuellar Showcases $1 Million in Funding for Housing Repairs in Zapata County

On June 21, 2024, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) joined local leaders to showcase $1,000,000 in Community Project Funding for housing repairs in Zapata County. The funds have already enabled the completion of repairs on 28 homes, with 17 more currently undergoing improvements.

“During the summer months, high temperatures in South Texas average close to 100 degrees. Air conditioning becomes a basic necessity, leading to a substantial increase in utility bills,” said Dr. Cuellar. “These federal dollars will help Zapata County families lower their utility bills and make their homes more energy efficient by utilizing the latest weatherization technology. I want to thank Joe Rathmell, Zapata County Judge, the Zapata County Commissioners, and Elizabeth Alonso-Villareal, CEO of NeighborWorks Laredo, for their commitment to providing quality housing in our area.”

The Community Project Funds, awarded to NeighborWorks Laredo, will benefit 50 homes in Zapata County. The funding also includes an additional $1,000,000 to benefit 50 homes in Webb County, totaling $2,000,000 in awards.

Eligible homes will benefit from repairs that include:

  • HVAC replacements
  • Home insulation
  • Window replacement and caulking
  • Pipe insulation
  • ADA upgrades for safety and accessibility
  • Roof replacing and repairing

These improvements aim to ensure adequate safety and energy efficiency. One household has already saved $100 per month in electricity costs. The home repairs have also created jobs for 25 people in Zapata and Webb Counties.
