The Boerne Police Department has once again been recognized as an Accredited Law Enforcement Agency by the Texas Police Chiefs Association after a lengthy application and review process. This is a re-affirmation of the initial accreditation the department first received in 2012.
"Every four years, police agencies accredited by the TPCA must undergo a rigorous review and on-site inspection to maintain accreditation," said Police Chief Steve Perez.
The Boerne Police Department is one of just 213 law enforcement agencies in Texas with this accreditation out of more than 2,700 agencies across the state.
“The Boerne Police Department has always considered itself to be one of the best in the state,” Police Chief Steve Perez said. “This process provided for an independent review of the department’s operations and should assure the citizens of Boerne that its Police Department is operating under best practices in the field of law enforcement.”
The Accreditation Program evaluates a police department’s compliance with over 173 best business practices for Texas law enforcement carefully developed by professionals to assist agencies in the efficient and effective delivery of service and the protection of individuals’ rights. They cover all aspects of law enforcement operations including use of force, protection of citizen rights, vehicle pursuits, property and evidence management, and patrol and investigative operations.
This voluntary process required the Boerne Police Department to conduct a critical self-review of the agency’s policies, procedures, facilities, and operations.
The department prepared proofs of compliance for each of the 173 best practices and upon completion of the internal review, an outside audit and review was requested. This final on-site review took place on May 22-23, 2024, by trained police chiefs from other areas of the state. The result of this review was then sent to the Texas Police Chiefs Association’s Accreditation Committee for final analysis and decision to award accredited status.
On June 7, 2024, the department was notified that it had been awarded the coveted Accredited Law Enforcement Agency award. The department will be accredited at the Texas Police Chiefs Association annual conference in April next year.
