Schertz Teen Dies in Train Incident Ruled a Suicide

On October 24, 2024, at approximately 7:50 a.m., the Schertz Police Department responded to an emergency call regarding a train accident involving a pedestrian near the intersection of FM 78 and FM 3009. According to Union Pacific, a person stepped onto the train tracks as the train was approaching, resulting in a fatal incident.

The victim, identified as 19-year-old Avery Matherne of Schertz, TX, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Guadalupe County Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3, was notified. Investigators initially reported that the victim appeared to be a white male between the ages of 17 and 20, but further investigation confirmed his identity. Notifications have been made to his next of kin.

During the investigation, the tracks were closed at multiple crossings, with the scene cleared at approximately 10:10 a.m. Schertz Police Chief Jim Lowery commented on the tragedy, noting, "This is a tragic accident that may have been avoidable." He emphasized the importance of avoiding walking along or crossing railroad tracks, stating that it is not only dangerous but also illegal.

The Schertz Police Department was assisted in the investigation by the Guadalupe County Constable's Office Precinct 3, Union Pacific Investigators, and Cibolo PD. Authorities have determined that the incident was a suicide and are continuing to collaborate with Union Pacific Investigators.
