Early on November 14, 2024, Kerr County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call from a distressed woman in the 100 block of Short Line Drive, Center Point. The caller reported that a male suspect, identified as 41-year-old Zeferino Arreola Lopez, was firing a .30-06 hunting rifle inside a residence.
Upon deputies’ arrival, it was discovered that Lopez had left the scene in a pickup truck. Investigators from the Special Operations Division identified the vehicle and began tracking it along FM 480. The vehicle was followed to the 200 block of Tremper Trail, where deputies executed a tactical vehicle stop, safely detaining Lopez without incident.
Lopez was transported to the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office for questioning. During a custodial interview with detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division, Lopez confessed to causing damage to two vehicles prior to the shooting. Authorities believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor to the incident.
Lopez was charged with three counts of Deadly Conduct, each a third-degree felony, one felony count of Criminal Mischief, and one misdemeanor count of Criminal Mischief. Bond has not yet been set.
Sheriff Larry Leitha emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “This kind of reckless and deadly behavior will never be tolerated in Kerr County. This individual put not only the occupants of the home in danger but many innocent people within range of his rifle. For a .30-06, that’s over four miles in any direction. We are pleased to have this suspect in custody. Alcohol, firearms, and interpersonal issues can be a deadly mix, and we were lucky no one was harmed in this incident. Our teams did a great job and responded quickly to protect public safety.”
As the investigation continues, authorities have indicated that additional charges may be filed before trial.
