Frio Canyon Park in Leakey will soon feature a new inclusive, ADA-compliant playground, funded by a $50,000 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) and Bandera Electric Cooperative, along with $62,305 in matching funds from the Frio Canyon Parks Association.
The new playground will include modern equipment, safety surfacing, and a shade structure, providing a safe and accessible outdoor space for visitors of all ages and abilities. Jillian Wade Dillard, president of the Frio Canyon Parks Association, highlighted the importance of the project, stating, “We want to enable our community to come together and support and encourage our youth to spend time outdoors and live healthy lives.”
Currently, the park features outdated equipment, including an unsafe slide and old swings. The new development aims to create a gathering spot for families to connect and enjoy outdoor recreation year-round.
LCRA General Manager Phil Wilson praised the project, saying, “Providing a safe space for children to play enhances the quality of life in a community. This playground illustrates the community’s commitment to high-quality amenities in a rural setting.”
The Frio Canyon Parks Association, which oversees the park’s development and maintenance, expressed gratitude to LCRA, Bandera Electric Cooperative, and other supporters for fostering inclusivity and strengthening the community.
The playground project is part of LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program, which funds capital improvement projects in its service areas. The City of Leakey owns the park, while the association ensures its upkeep.
