The Kyle Police Department's Criminal Investigations and Patrol Division successfully secured the arrest and conviction of a man for Capital Murder in the death of a 7-month-old infant.
Mark Anthony Briones, 34, of Kyle, was charged with Capital Murder following the tragic death of the infant. On June 20, 2022, Briones brought the unresponsive baby to Seton Hays Hospital. She was later airlifted to Dell Children’s Medical Center, where medical personnel declared her brain dead days later despite life-saving efforts.
The infant had suffered a severe brain injury and extensive bruising across her body, which medical experts identified as consistent with child abuse. The medical examiner ultimately ruled the death a homicide caused by blunt force trauma to the head.
While the infant was still hospitalized on life support, Kyle Police Department detectives Owens and Carasco immediately launched an investigation. They obtained search warrants, processed the crime scene, and conducted interviews with Briones and family members to gather critical evidence.
On June 28, 2022, an arrest warrant for Briones was issued by Beth Smith, Justice of the Peace for Precinct 2, and Kyle police executed the warrant, charging Briones with Capital Murder.
The investigation produced substantial evidence, leading to Briones' conviction on November 5, 2024. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole and is currently in the custody of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Kyle Police Chief praised the investigative team's efforts in pursuing justice for the infant, ensuring Briones will never harm another child.
