Suspicious Package Detonated by San Antonio Bomb Squad in Castroville

On December 9, 2024, at approximately 1 p.m., the Castroville Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious package at a donation site in the 1100 block of Highway US 90. After officers assessed the situation, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) Bomb Squad was called to investigate.

Upon arrival, SAPD bomb technicians conducted an inspection and used X-ray imaging to analyze the package. Based on concerning visuals, the team determined the safest course of action was to detonate the package. Two controlled detonations were carried out about 20 minutes apart.

Following the detonation, a search of the package revealed no explosive materials. Evidence was collected by the Castroville Police Department, but no dangerous substances were recovered.

Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including the Texas Department of Public Safety, FBI-San Antonio, Medina County Sheriff's Department, Hondo Police Department, Medina ESD 1 Fire and EMS, and the Medina County Fire Marshal’s Office. The investigation is ongoing.
