San Antonio Earns Gold Medal Rating for Second Consecutive Year, Leading Texas in Public Health Policies

For the second consecutive year, San Antonio has received a Gold Medal Rating from CityHealth, an initiative of the de Beaumont Foundation and Kaiser Permanente, recognizing the city’s commitment to adopting evidence-based policies that improve public health and well-being. San Antonio is the only city in Texas to earn this prestigious designation, placing it among just seven cities nationwide to achieve an overall Gold Medal Rating in 2024.

The Gold Medal Rating is awarded to cities that excel in at least five of the 12 policy areas evaluated by CityHealth. San Antonio earned six gold medals and one bronze medal in these categories, which include:

  • Gold: Affordable Housing Trusts
  • Gold: Complete Streets
  • Gold: Greenspace
  • Gold: Healthy Food Purchasing
  • Gold: High-Quality, Accessible Pre-K
  • Gold: Smoke-Free Indoor Air
  • Bronze: Eco-Friendly Purchasing

This year, other cities receiving the overall Gold Medal include Boston, Denver, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Portland, and St. Louis. CityHealth recognizes these cities for their efforts to create environments that promote the health and well-being of all residents, with a focus on access to safe housing, healthy food, clean air, and early childhood education.

“The 2024 gold medal rating represents San Antonio’s unwavering commitment to creating a healthier, more equitable future for our residents,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “By embracing innovative policies, we are building a community where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.”

City Manager Erik Walsh also celebrated the achievement, stating, “This honor underscores the power of collaboration and vision in addressing public health challenges. San Antonio will continue to lead the way in fostering a healthier life for our residents.”
