In the early hours of a rare South Texas snowstorm, with temperatures in the 20s, Medina County Fire and EMS crews responded to a structure fire on County Road 4637 in the Dunlay area.
The call came in just after 2:30 a.m. when a family awoke to the smell of smoke and discovered their garage was on fire. Chief 8101 arrived on the scene within 10 minutes, reporting flames coming from the attached garage.
Engine 10 arrived four minutes later and initiated an offensive attack, quickly controlling the fire and preventing it from spreading to the main living area of the home. Engine 60 provided additional support, assisting with fire suppression and ensuring all hotspots were extinguished. Medic 8130 evaluated the residents, confirming no injuries.
The fire, caused by a wood-burning stove used to heat the garage for animals, was declared under control just 19 minutes after dispatch. All animals inside the garage escaped unharmed.
The quick response from Medina County Fire/EMS saved the home’s living quarters from damage, bringing a successful resolution despite the challenging weather conditions.
