Newborn Found in Critical Condition Leads to Mother's Arrest in San Antonio

Ava Marie Guerra

A newborn baby found in critical condition on January 21, 2025, led to the arrest of the child’s mother after an investigation by the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD).

Officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Commerce Street after a man reported he had found a newborn at a separate location near Nolan and Cherry Street. Emergency Medical Services transported the infant to a local hospital, where the baby was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in critical condition.

SAPD Special Victims Unit detectives interviewed the man, who initially claimed he had discovered the baby but later admitted he knew where the child had been born and identified the mother. Detectives proceeded to an apartment where the birth took place and interviewed the child’s mother, identified as 28-year-old Ava Marie Guerra, along with witnesses.

Investigators determined that Guerra had given birth but failed to provide care for the infant. After some time, the man took the baby from the apartment in search of medical assistance, leading to the police response.

Following the investigation, Special Victims Unit detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Guerra. On January 27, 2025, she was taken into custody and charged with Injury to a Child – Reckless Serious Bodily Injury.
