Bandera Mayor Rebeca Gibson issued a statement on August 4, 2023, announcing the closure of Bandera City Park to swimming until further notice due to health concerns in the Medina River. A declaration of public health emergency was issued by the City of Bandera following an assessment of the river's conditions, which revealed high water temperature, low water flow, and elevated bacteria levels accessible from the City Park.
Mayor Gibson emphasized the importance of public safety and stated, "For your safety, Bandera City Park is closed to swimming until further notice. Entry is permitted by foot or bike. Paws and hooves are welcome. Please be advised that this hazard is not limited by the boundaries of our park per nature. We look forward to moving beyond these circumstances in the future and sharing the enjoyment of our shared love, the Medina River when conditions are once again safe."
The decision to close the park was taken in response to the concerning water conditions, which posed potential risks to public health. The elevated bacteria levels could lead to waterborne illnesses, and the combination of high water temperature and low water flow could increase the likelihood of accidents and injuries.
The City Council will be addressing this matter during their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, August 8th, where they will review the situation and consider potential measures to mitigate the issues affecting the river's health.
Residents and visitors are urged to adhere to the closure notice and avoid swimming in the Medina River accessible from Bandera City Park until further notice.
