In a move aimed at enhancing traffic flow and ensuring safety, the City of Boerne recently completed the restriping of a vital stretch of South Esser Road, extending from Blanco Road to Highway 46/River Road. This area, traversed by over 13,000 drivers daily, now boasts a continuous center turn lane, providing a solution to longstanding traffic challenges.
The newly installed turn lane stands out for its width, intentionally designed to accommodate large vehicles, such as utility trucks and school buses. This design innovation prevents these vehicles from impeding traffic flow, ensuring a smooth and safe experience for all drivers. The initiative was driven by insights from the City's Utilities, Engineering, and Mobility offices, as well as the Boerne ISD Transportation Office, all located along this vital corridor.
Engineering and Mobility Director, Jeff Carroll, emphasized the practicality of the project. "There are a lot of simple ways to safely and efficiently improve the flow of traffic," Carroll stated. "The data backs up the work that was done, and we are confident that these changes will make a significant difference."
As part of the City's broader efforts to enhance road safety, the travel lanes were intentionally narrowed. This deliberate measure encourages drivers to slow down, addressing concerns raised by local residents about speeding in this heavily trafficked area.
The restriping initiative aligns with recommendations from the Kendall County, Boerne, and Fair Oaks Transportation Committee (KCBFOTC), which concluded its multi-year efforts in 2022. The project is also a key component of the City’s Mobility Master Plan (MMP). This forward-thinking plan outlines 18 roadway enhancement projects, 20 intersection improvements, and 11 bicycle and pedestrian projects, all geared towards alleviating congestion, reducing travel times, and enhancing safety.
City Manager Ben Thatcher expressed his satisfaction with the progress. "By working strategically and efficiently, we will continue to check off recommendations to serve the community well," Thatcher affirmed.
The City’s FY 2024 budget includes funding for other roadway improvements, including work on the design and/or construction of:
- Scenic Loop Road widening from City limit to I-10
- Adler Road widening (2022 Bond Project)
- Johns Road intersection improvements (2022 Bond Project)
- Reconstruction of Parkway, Kronkosky, W. Blanco and Shooting Club (2022 Bond Projects)
- Sidewalk improvements on Main Street and Oak Park
