The Medina County Office of Emergency Management has received official notification from the Uvalde County Office of Emergency Management regarding a planned balloon launch by the University of Houston. Approximately 35 balloons are set to be launched from Friday the 13th through the 14th, originating from three locations near Utopia.
A Notice to Airmen has been filed for this event, with the balloons expected to travel over Medina County towards San Antonio. These disposable balloons, which will not harm wildlife, are not intended for recovery. They will reach an altitude of approximately 100,000 feet (31 kilometers) before bursting.
The balloons are equipped with labels containing contact information in case they are found. Despite their high altitude, these balloons are not expected to pose any risk to the environment or local communities.
This launch coincides with an eclipse expected to take place on Saturday. Medina County leadership and the Hondo Airport have been informed about the event to ensure awareness and coordination during this period.
