On November 2, 2023, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28), announced the allocation of $1,875,000 in federal funds for the purpose of hiring additional police officers in Laredo. These funds have been made available through the U.S. Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Service (COPS) Hiring Program and will facilitate the recruitment of 15 new officers for the local law enforcement agencies.
Dr. Cuellar, who serves as a member of the House Appropriations Committee, expressed his commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies and ensuring they have the necessary resources to safeguard their communities. He highlighted the positive outcomes of the COPS Hiring Program and its impact on Laredo, underscoring the importance of adequately funding the program.
In his statement, Dr. Cuellar stated, "The COPS Hiring Program provides our local law enforcement agencies with the resources they need to protect our communities. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I worked hard to keep this program fully funded. We're seeing the results of that today right here in Laredo. I stand with the men and women in blue, and I will continue to provide them with the resources they need to do their jobs well."
Dr. Cuellar also extended his gratitude to Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino, City Manager Joseph Neeb, and Chief of Police Miguel Rodriguez, Jr., for their collaboration in securing these federal funds, emphasizing the significance of the community's joint efforts in enhancing public safety.
