Unauthorized Use of Valero Credit Cards Reported in Kerrville, Skimmer Discovered

The Kerrville Police Department has received multiple reports of unauthorized use of Valero gas station credit cards, prompting an investigation into potential credit card skimming activities.

The incidents took place at a local gas station towards the end of October. Preliminary findings suggest that one or more gas pumps were equipped with a "skimmer," a device used to illicitly capture credit card information. Notably, the affected credit cards lacked a security chip, making them susceptible to fraudulent transactions.

Credit card skimmers are discreet devices installed inside gas pumps or credit card readers, aiming to harvest payment card details from unsuspecting customers during fuel purchases. Signs of tampering include loose or damaged pump cabinets, insecure card slots, and evidence of broken security tape on cabinets.

To safeguard against such threats, consumers are advised to adopt best practices when using gas pumps:

  • Choose well-lit stations with visible security cameras.
  • Consider paying for gas inside the station using cash.
  • If card payment is necessary, use a store's mobile app, opt for credit, or choose a credit card over a debit card. If forced to use a debit card, never disclose the PIN.
  • Select a pump located close to the building within the clerk's line of sight.
  • When entering a code or PIN, cover the keypad to prevent unauthorized observation.
  • Regularly monitor credit card statements for unauthorized transactions and promptly report any discrepancies to the credit card company.
