In response to unsafe driving conditions, the City of Boerne Engineering and Mobility Department announced the closure of the W. Theissen Street bridge over Frederick Creek on Monday, Dec. 11. The closure will remain in effect until further notice to facilitate necessary emergency repairs.
City officials, in consultation with public safety teams and the traffic and safety committee, took this step after comprehensive inspections were initiated. The examination of culverts and drainage inlets, usually submerged in water, revealed significant erosion in a culvert along the creek. This erosion, attributed to decades of exposure to the elements, prompted the decision to close the bridge for immediate repairs.
The City is collaborating with a local contractor, and repair work is scheduled to commence in the coming weeks. The estimated cost of the project is $90,000, with an anticipated completion time of 4-6 weeks once construction begins.
During the closure, barricades will be placed on both sides of the bridge, restricting access to the construction site. For drivers seeking alternative routes, nearby businesses and homes can be accessed by utilizing Main Street and W. Hosack Street to reach W. Theissen Street. Pedestrian access to the Cibolo Trail in the vicinity will remain open.
