The City of Kerrville Public Works, Solid Waste Division, is urging residents to take advantage of the free bulky item drop-off program in 2024. The initiative allows Kerrville residents with an active account for solid waste services to make two complimentary trips per calendar year to the landfill.
Eligible residents can request up to two landfill vouchers to dispose of items such as appliances (washers, dryers, water heaters), miscellaneous furniture, and bagged trash. Refrigerators, freezers, and A/C units are accepted only if the refrigerant has been reclaimed and the unit tagged by a licensed technician. Brush, yard waste, and covered or secured loads are also permitted with the voucher.
In 2023, the city issued a total of 1,716 vouchers, marking a 15% increase from 2022. However, as of December 31, 2023, only just over half of the issued vouchers were redeemed.
Important voucher guidelines include wearing a safety vest during unloading, with vests available for purchase at the landfill for $5.20. Each voucher is valid for a single trip to the landfill, expiring on December 31, 2024. All transported items must be covered and/or secured during transportation.
Landfill hours are Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Larger loads require prior approval; residents can contact Public Works at (830) 258-1221.
Prohibited items include tires, household paints, chemicals, hazardous items, new or used motor oil, batteries, ammunition, and construction materials.
The Solid Waste Division encourages residents to check with neighbors who may need assistance, promoting community engagement and stewardship while reminding residents that guidelines apply when assisting neighbors.
